美国大学在筛选金融工程项目申请者时，申请者需要有非常高的数学及计算机能力：
1）与我们所熟悉的金融专业相比，金融工程是“金融+数学”，而金融只局限于经济学领域。金融工程学的理论性与抽象性是比较强的，它广泛应用数学、物理和工程学方法，用数理语言代替日常语言来阐述金融思想。因此，金融工程学对数学的要求非常高，需要有量化分析能力和编程建模能力的工作。
